About Colombo National Museum
On January 1st, 1877, the Colombo National Museum was established by the Sir Lankan British Governor of that time Sir William Henry Gregory. It is made in a two-story building with a wide open lush green lawn full of banyan trees.

In 1942 under act No. 31, the Department of National Museums was founded. Its 9 branches have now been established in different areas with a school science program too.
This museum is further improved with different galleries organized in sequence. The upper floor galleries represent the thematic basis and the ground floor galleries are in historical sequence.
