History
Galle was busy as a port from 125-150 CE where it was used to trade with Arab countries, China and Greece. It gradually expanded into a small harbor as the Portuguese first landed there in 1505 and did notable changes and developments in the area.
The Portuguese then started to build a fort along with a Franciscan chapel in 1541. Even though Colombo was used as the main city by them initially, later they moved to Galle as they were attacked by the Sinhalese king, Raja Singha l. To protect themselves, they built a fort using palm trees. They slowly built it into a watch tower with three bastions with the goal of protecting the harbor.
In 1640, the arrival of the Dutch took place. They captured the Galle fort in the same year with the help of King Raja Singha ll. From there on, the fort was built up and other buildings were added to the premises.
The British took over the place in 1796 and the importance of the Galle fort began to decline as they made Colombo the capital. Several changes occurred in the fort during this period of the 16th to 19th centuries. But it still remains as one of the most unique fortifications ever built with the fusion of several cultures.
