Pidurangala rock is a famous hiking spot among the locals and tourists in Sri Lanka that gives an astonishing 360 degree panoramic view of the Sigiriya rock fortress and its surroundings. It is located a few kilometers away from Sigiriya rock.
It is not known for a while by the local or international tourists but now it is visited by a few people for so many reasons including having a better view of the Sigiriya rock fortress and the beautiful surroundings.
So if you are about to pay a visit to Pidurangala rock, here’s a glimpse of everything you need to know before taking the hike!.
History of Pidurangala
The fascinating history of Pidurangala claims to be tied with the Sigiriya rock fortress (Lion Rock). Before king Kashyapa started building the Sigiriya rock fortress, there were monks living around. So he had to relocate them to a new monastery, which is on Pidurangala rock.
While king Kashyapa was moving the monks, he offered them a pile of gold. The abbreviation for pile of gold is Pidurangala in Sinhala. This is where it is believed that the rock got its name from.
The cave temple which is built in this monastery was named as ‘Uppalavanna Kashyapa Giri Viharaya’.
There are a few inscriptions that give records on what happened around the premises and the donation transfer history of the premises. Initially, it highlights that the place was donated by kings to the monks to be used as a monastery and the surroundings as paddy fields.
Relics of older ritual buildings including the cave temple can be seen at the lower terrace as well as the upper terrace. There’s also an archeological museum that you can pay a visit to at the premises that have the antiques from the temple.
Hiking
If you are good and fit at hiking, it will take approximately 30 minutes to climb up. But if you are slow, it will take a little longer (let’s say around 45 minutes to an hour). It all depends on your level of fitness.
The hike begins at the base of the rock, where the ‘Pidurangala Sigiri Raja Maha Viharaya’ is located. There are stairs at the beginning which will make the start easy.
It’s a well maintained trail which is also slightly off the road. This pathway goes through the jungle so the climb has to be taken over the rocks, big tree roots, caves and cliffs. The first stop of the hike will end up leading you to the cave temple ‘Uppalavanna Kashyapa Giri Viharaya’.
Rest of the hike passing the cave temple is quite tricky.
It is more of a clamber where you’ll have to figure out the path on your own over the large cliffs, boulders and rocks. There are some sort of signs painted on rocks showing you guidance to the path but still, it’s better if you can find a way that is easy for you.
If you are an aged person or having any injuries or pains, this part of the climb is not recommended for you. There are some slippery rocks and small wild animals along the way so you have to keep an eye while climbing.
At the end of a quite tiring climb, you’ll enter the main part of the Pidurangala rock. From there, you have to take a small walk on the rock to find the best view that you always wanted to see.
