Polhena Beach

One of the most scenic beaches with calm and shallow waters in Matara is the Polhena Beach. It is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. If you are visiting Matara with your family or are a beginner swimmer, then Polhena Beach is a good option to begin with.

The presence of natural coral reefs offshore acts as a protective barrier and makes the water perfect to enjoy the sea without strong currents. You will also find colorful fish and turtles beneath the waters for an amazing snorkeling experience.

If you want to enjoy the less-crowded snorkeling experience, visit the beach in the morning or in the afternoon. Beaches offer the best sunset. At Polhena Beach as well, you will get to witness a beautiful sun setting in the Indian Ocean.

An exciting part is that you can try snorkeling in Polhena Beach even at night. For the day, it starts at 8 am and lasts till 10 am. This will cost you $18 per person. The night snorkeling lasts for an hour and begins at 7 p.m. The cost of this one is $28 per person. You can also book custom slots if you wish to.

Matara Beach

The stunning coastal stretch of Matara Beach offers a more energetic vibe. It has become a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing as it boasts a picturesque view of the Indian Ocean. As the beach is very close to Matara town, you can explore the nearby restaurants and cafes to try Sri Lankan delicacies.

We recommend evening walks along the shore of the Matara Beach so that you witness the breathtaking sunsets and see the shades of sky in orange and pink. Matara Beach is considered one of the hidden gems and is believed to offer the local charm. Matara Beach is a peaceful one away from the commercialization and untouched vibe.

The gentle waves of Matara Beach make it a brilliant spot for swimming, especially for children. This beach is also believed to be the gateway to the southern coast and the rich culture of Matara and Sri Lanka.

Dondra Lighthouse

A short drive from Matara will take you to the Dondra Lighthouse. It is a majestic structure standing tall as the southernmost point of the country. It is the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka and one of the tallest in South Asia.

It was built in 1890 using all the materials imported from England. This lighthouse offers spectacular views of the Indian Ocean by visiting the top after receiving the permission. The area is surrounded by coconut palms, clear skies, and peace, along with the sound of water.

The visiting hours are between 7 am and 6 pm every day. There is no entry fee to visit the inside base of the lighthouse, but if you wish to climb up the top, you will have to purchase the tickets from there itself. This may cost you under LKR 500 per person. Remember, there are 196 steps that you will have to climb. So, if you are able to step up, only buy tickets then.

Weherahena Viharaya

One of the most significant Buddhist temples with a gigantic Buddha statue of over 88 feet is at Weherahena Viharaya. The intricate murals depicting scenes from Buddha’s life are spread across the underground temple walls. Weherahena is no less than a pilgrimage site for the Buddhists.

The temple has a peaceful atmosphere with striking artwork, religious significance, and fascinating history. Visiting the Weherahena Viharaya leads to a unique cultural experience and your Matara trip shall be incomplete if you do not go here.

The temple opens at 6 am and closes at 9 pm for the visitors. The entry fee to visit the Weherahena Poorwarama Rajamaha Viharaya is LKR 250 per person. The history of the Weherahena Viharaya is very fascinating. The legend has it that a monk was banished by his teacher and he then asked villages to build a small clay house for him. The monk then had an idea of making a great temple for his lord, Gautama Buddha.

Star Fort Matara

For all history lovers, Star Fort Matara is a must-visit. It offers glimpses of the region’s colonial history as the fort was built by the Dutch in the 18th century. It has a unique star-shaped design, hence the name. The fort was built on a very strategic point, offering panoramic views of the ocean and also protection from invaders.

Though it is smaller than most forts, this one is considered an architectural gem that showcases a combination of Sutch and local building techniques. The fort has a museum, which is going to be an exciting visit for all the history enthusiasts.

This fort allows you to witness the Dutch influence on Sri Lanka. The fort is closed on Tuesdays. On other days, the visiting hours are from 9 am to 4 pm. The entry is free for all.
