Day 1 Negombo
Just a short drive from Bandaranaike International Airport, Negombo is a coastal city. It is popular for its fish markets and clean beaches. The fishing industry here dates back centuries and is still very prominent. There are many places to visit here that can be covered in a day.
So, for day 1, you will cover the entire city of Negombo. Begin your tour by taking blessings at Abhayasekararama temple. This is the Buddhist temple dedicated to Lord Buddha. The area is so calm and peaceful.
After the temple, your next stop should be Negombo Dutch Fort. It was originally built by the Portuguese but was finally captured by the Dutch. It is now in ruins but you can still see the basic architecture. The visiting hours are from 8 am to 8 pm. The entry is free for all.
Then, have a delicious authentic sea food lunch and after resting for a while, head over to Negombo beach. This one is a huge beach with red/orangish sand. You will really enjoy a lot here. This sums up day one in Sri Lanka.
Day 2 Dambulla
For day two, we head over to Dambulla. Here is the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Dambulla Cave Temple. It is famous for its ancient cave paintings and intricate statues. If you want to explore the market life of Sri Lanka, go to the Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre. This market operates 24 hours a day. It is like a nucleus of economic activity. If you want, you can purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from here. Let us now move on to day three.
Day 3 Sigiriya
For day three, you will explore Sigiriya, another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka. It is just a few kilometers away from Dambulla. Here, the Sigiriya rock is the main attraction. Make sure to visit here early in the morning.
This rock was formed out of an ancient, extinct volcano. While you climb up the rock, you will get to see ancient paintings called frescoes on the walls. These are way too old and hold a lot of significance. It was also held as a rock-shelter by the monks. The visiting hours are between 5 am and 5 pm every day.
You need to pay USD 36 to climb the fort. The ticket also includes a visit to the Sigiriya Museum. If you do not wish to hike the rock and only want to visit a museum, the ticket price is USD 6. Another spot next to Sigiriya is Pidurangala Rock. The ticket costs LKR 1000 per person.

Day 4 Kandy
Let us head to Kandy for day four. Welcome to the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. Being the last capital of Sri Lankan kings, it has prominence in cultural values. Kandy is home to a Buddhist pilgrimage site, the Temple of Tooth Relic. It is another UNESCO World Heritage Site in the nation.
In local language, the temple is called Sri Dalada Maligawa. Visit the temple between 5.30 am and 8 pm. It is situated in the Royal Palace Complex. Entry fees are LKR 1500 for foreign nationals and LKR 750 for SAARC nationals.
The next spot is Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. You can spend time with elephants here. It opens at 8.30 am and closes at 6 pm. The ticket price ranges between LKR 30 and LKR 700. Day 5 & 6 Nuwara Eliya
The last two days will be at Nuwara Eliya. It is called as the Little England of Sri Lanka. Cool climate and colonial architecture have given this place its name. We suggest you take a train ride from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya. This is going to be a scenic experience.
Once you reach here, make a visit to a tea factory or see tea-plantations. You get to taste the authentic tea here. You can also pluck the tea leaves by yourself and see the process of making tea. For day two, you must visit Hortons National Park.
It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It received the designation for its diverse wildlife and landscapes. World’s End and Gregory Lake are the other two places to visit in Nuwara Eliya.
